    All Music Guide Review

Dick Dale and Gary Hoey's hard-charging "Misirlou '97" sets the tone for this aggressive surf rock compilation, which consists of mostly newly recorded (or otherwise unheard) tracks from such surf and sand stalwarts as well as the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett, along with some less likely contributors who nevertheless turn in worthy performances. The tunes rock, whether it's Jewel becoming a surprisingly effective blues mama on "V-12 Cadillac," or the Brian Setzer Orchestra handling a typically swinging instrumental, "Fly Juice." Farthest from the surf, perhaps, is the becalmed Porno For Pyros take on "Tonight" from West Side Story, but then, Manhattan is an island, right? (No, it's a beach!) ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
