    B-Sides and Rarities

    03/22/2005 | Mute U.s.

    All Music Guide Review

Nick Cave finally gives the dedicated fans what they've desired for years (and have probably amassed in various guises in shoddy bootlegs): an official career-spanning cataloging of the various Bad Seeds odds and ends on three CDs. There are 56 tracks compiled here. There are also some soundtrack offerings ranging from "I'll Love You to the End of the World," "Cassiel's Song," and "I Feel So Good" from various Wim Wenders films to a previously unreleased alternate version of "Red Right Hand," recorded for Scream 3. There are the Bad Seeds' contributions to tribute albums such as Cave's rendition of Neil Young's "Helpless" from the Bridge benefit, and "Tower of Song" from the Leonard Cohen tribute I'm Your Fan. There are familiar covers such as the Cave/Shane MacGowan "collaboration" on "Wonderful World" and the awesome version of Roy Orbison's "Running Scared" that appeared as one of the B-sides of "The Singer" (and yes, "Black Betty" is here, too). (But why is Cave's read of "In the Ghetto" absent?) Real rarities include versions of the traditional "Rye Whiskey" from a flexidisc in Reflex magazine and "Scum," which was only sold at concerts. There is an unreleased version of "Where the Wild Roses Grow" with former Bad Seed Blixa Bargeld on vocals, as well as studio outtakes of "Opium Tea" and "Sheep May Safely Graze." And this is just a smattering. One of the true treasures here is "There's No Night Out in the Jail," recorded for an Australian country music compilation that was never issued. And of course, virtually every B-side is here, including the take of "Nocturama" that was included on the limited-edition 7" single. For Cave fans who have been patiently and exhaustively compiling this stuff in all sorts of dodgy ways, this set is a righteous archivist's gift. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

    Notes

“THIS IS MY FAVOURITE NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS ALBUM.” – NICK CAVE

Spanning the full twenty-one years of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds illustrious career, this comprehensive three CD set, entitled B-Sides & Rarities, presents a thrilling and eclectic retrospective collection of material by the band, some of which has been deleted, featured on a disparate number of soundtrack albums or has never been officially released before. Long term Bad Seeds aficionados, recent converts or the merely curious will find much to appreciate and enjoy in this landmark 56 track compilation.

From the very beginning of the band's career in 1984 (in that year 'The Moon Is In The Gutter' appeared on the flipside of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds first 7" inch vinyl release, B-Sides & Rarities offers an alternative engrossing account of the band's continuing artistic development and influences through its impressive collection of extra studio recorded tracks that that were not included on completed Nick Cave And The Bad Seed albums, songs that were recorded on commission for motion picture soundtracks or cover version tribute albums and two radio sessions.

This project has been gestating for some years. "I originally put the idea of doing this B-Sides & Rarities collection in 1996/97, compiling two discs, as it would have been then," recollects Harvey. "The general response was, 'Yes, great idea. We just have to look for the right moment to do it.' There hasn't been enough space where there wasn't something else imminent. Its release now is a fairly arbitrary moment in time. Now it has expanded to three discs, which is fine. The running order was generally put together in some chronological order, although it was mixed up a little here and there, if songs didn't go together very well.
