Modern Rock 1988: Hang the DJ is the strongest installment in Rhino's college rock series, offering the best sampling of popular alternative rock favorites of the late '80s. A few Top 40 hits have been included -- the Bangles' "Hazy Shade of Winter" and INXS' "Need You Tonight" -- that perhaps shouldn't have been present, but the majority of the collection concentrates on songs by Jane's Addiction, the Fall, Ministry, Erasure, the Primitives, the Mission UK, the Smithereens, R.E.M., and the Church that were primarily heard on college radio stations. It's a diverse collection that offers the roots of the alternative rock breakthrough of the early '90s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
