Kill Rock Stars' 2002 collection Fields and Streams brings together tracks by artists who are on Kill Rock Stars and a bunch of other bands and artists who aren't but the fine folks at KRS just plain like. Many of the bands are female-fronted in the tradition of the riot grrrl movement, which the label was at the forefront of. Otherwise, the selection of bands is pretty wide-ranging, from the gutter punk of Fifth Column to the girl group sweetness of the Aislers Set to the soaring chamber pop of Jeff Hanson to the whacked-out art rock of Erase Errata. There are a handful of big-name indie rockers here; the Mooney Suzuki turn in the rollicking "All of the Evils in the World," Quasi ably covers Curtis Mayfield's "Queen Majesty," the Yeah Yeah Yeahs contribute "Modern Life," Comet Gain's power ballad "Look at You Now, You're Crying" is one of the disc's high points, and Neko Case covers a friend's song, "Knock Loud." The fun of a disc like this is discovering new bands, and there are many here who make the most of their shot at the big time. The Long Goodbye, the Process, Manda & the Marbles, and the Lost Sounds would all fit within that category. Fields and Streams is a fine snapshot of U.S./U.K. indie rock circa 2002. That, and the fact that almost all of the songs aren't available anywhere else, makes this an essential purchase for those who want to be in the know. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
