Though it's supposed to be a tribute to Michelangelo Antonioni's cult movie Blow Up, it's hard to see what connection there is to the music on offer here, though Dean Roberts is supposed to have based his "A Yard of Birds" on the Yardbirds material briefly featured in the film. Matmos' offering, "Despite Its Aesthetic Advances, in Its Policing of the Sexuality of Public Space Antonioni's Film Perpetuates Misogyny and Homophobia," is hardly as interesting as its title, and the contributions from Mushroom (whose Pat Thomas seems to have been behind the entire project), Birdsong's Air Force, and Dorgon are decidedly limp. The Sun City Girls, William Parker, and Loren Connors tracks, though, are strong enough to satisfy those completists who'll feel obliged to invest, though they offer few surprises. It's probably worth the price of admission for Arthur Doyle's "You End Me on the African Express," which interleaves his own "African Express" with a ravishing, punning take on Sam Cooke. ~ Dan Warburton, All Music Guide
