    All Music Guide Review

Faust is the heavy metal soundtrack to the film of the same name. Where many metal soundtracks consist of a few known groups and several unknowns, this soundtrack is the opposite as it actually features most of the biggest names in the underground metal scene. Most of these songs have been released on other albums before, but that only makes the soundtrack more of a sampler of the metal scene in the late '90s/beginning of the century. Some of the better bands on the soundtrack are represented by their weaker tracks; good examples of this are Sepultura's two contributions (which suffer from the awkwardness that set in after founder Max Cavalera left the band) and Soulfly's weak rap-metal entry (which ironically is the band that Cavalera founded in the wake of his departure). Still, there are some fantastic metal songs on the soundtrack, especially the entries from underground heroes Fear Factory, Brujeria's savage "Colas De Rata," and Spineshank's driving "Asthmatic." Even the classic death metal sounds of Obituary and Nailbomb are represented by two of their best tracks. With almost ten years of good heavy metal represented here, this does make an excellent primer for anyone curious to hear what was going on in the underground while Korn and Limp Bizkit spread their evil in the mainstream. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
