Before punk infiltrated the mainstream in 1991, it wasn't uncommon for shows to end in a dangerous riot between the audience and police. Bad Religion's appropriately titled 2000 DVD, The Riot, is one of the few times that such an aforementioned melee has been caught on tape. The incident occurred on December 29, 1990, when a fire marshal decided to shut down an over-sold show at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood, and a friend of the band happened to be taping the show on his video camera. Also included is a show from CSUN's Devonshire Downs from 1988 during the Suffer tour, including such standouts as "We're Only Gonna Die," "Your Are the Government," and "Bad Religion," as well as a late-'90s soundcheck run-through of "21st Century Digital Boy." As a bonus, The Riot contains never before seen backstage footage, as well as director's comments. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
